It’s been a pleasure to help Karolin Schnoor create her new online portfolio. Check out her illustration design and shop!

About 2 months ago myself Paul Barton and Karolin Schnoor completed a website project for the Hidde Van Seggelen Gallery. The website is ticking over nicely and there are some brilliant pieces of work by the artists represented by Hidde Van Seggelen in Chelsea London. Some of these are featured above but you can view more by clicking here.
‘Live Radar‘ is a new site by Paul Barton which allows users to enter in their location and view all the nearest music gigs happening around them ordered by date. The site uses feeds from myspace and Last FM and provides a really useful service to people who are looking for a good night and want to get a list of their options very quickly. The site also allows you to search for a particular band or venue for people who have something a little more specific in mind. Paul asked me to put together the look and feel of the site and has had very good response from the final design.

Always lots of very exciting stuff happening at Hyper Island. This was made by The Interactive Art Director students at Hyper Island and hosted by North Kingdom.
Every bone in my body loved this as a teenager and I still do!
I already loved Arcade Fire and their new album ‘The Suburbs‘ before I stumbled upon this brilliant interactive video by Chris Milk and I love them even more now! Incorporating the viewers own home town imagery with the Arcade Fire track ‘We Used To Wait’ playing over the top really makes the subject matter and lyrics much more relevant. Crazy weird and beautifull video commisioned by the Swiss Zirkel Gallery, “Peripetics“is a great exporation into computer graphics as art.

I recently posted about an autobiographical book by Sven Berlin named “The Dark Monarch” which had quite an impact on me. One of the reasons for it’s great effect on me was my great interest in the subject matter and St Ives (the place the book is set) not to mention the gut wrenching tragedy’s which were inflicted upon Sven in that part of his life.
Well I have just returned from another trip to St Ives with another book by Sven entitled ‘Virgo in Exile‘. Sven called these books “Autosvenographys” and even though I am only a quarter of the way through this one I think they are absolutely brilliant. The way they are written is beautiful and they are a great insight into an artists mind and artists of that period. “The Dark Monarch” was set almost solely in St Ives and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about how he experienced the place. In the “Virgo in Exile” Sven is forced to leave St Ives and take residence as a sort of gypsy living in a forest. Simply the way Sven describes his surroundings and life in general is absolutely wonderful.
Another interesting thing about these books is the hardback covers… On the outside it looks exactly like what you’d expect a small artist’s publication to look like – a self portrait and some quite awkward large text with the basic author name and book title. However! When you take these plasticy covers off each one has a gold Sven Berlin logo embossed into a red hard back cover. I think the logo is Svens own invention and it really is quite a pleasant surprise after looking at the garish paper cover. Anyway there is no major point to this post other than I think Sven Berlin was a brilliant writer.

I’ve always enjoyed the output of creative agency ‘I Love Dust‘ and they have recently updated their website with a completely new look and loads of new bits of work. Some crazy and great illustrations, typography and product design. I particularly liked the illustration above for Facets of Femininity.

Gravenhurst have interested me for quite some time now and this particular video has quite an interesting story behind it. Each frame of the videos animation has been made into a one off album cover screen print. A really great idea and a very nice way to literally incorporate the album artwork with the tracks meaning and story.
The director of this video Thomas Hicks has worked with Gravenhurst over the past few years on some great projects. Check out some more of his videos here.
